Playground does not mean mere playing, it means developing characters that the children will bear throughout the life. Reading is not complete without being accompanied by playing. While the former is theory, the latter is practice. Reading should go with exercise as its essential companion. Since children are unlikely to assimilate the importance of exercise, playing is very innate to them to adopt without saying.
